What is Shingles?

Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash. It's caused by the varicella-zoster virus - the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you've had chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in your nervous system and can reactivate years later as shingles.

Common Symptoms

• Painful, burning rash that typically appears as a stripe of blisters
• Tingling or burning sensation before rash appears
• Sensitivity to touch
• Fever and chills
• Headache
• Fatigue

Risk Factors

• Age (more common in people over 50)

• History of chickenpox

Complications

Post-herpetic Neuralgia (PHN)

The most common complication is ongoing nerve pain after the rash heals, which can last months or years.
