What is Ringworm?

Ringworm (tinea) is a common fungal infection of the skin, despite its name having nothing to do with worms. It's characterized by a circular, red, itchy rash with clearer skin in the center, giving it a ring-like appearance.

Common Types

  • Tinea corporis: Affects the body
  • Tinea capitis: Affects the scalp
  • Tinea pedis: Athlete's foot
  • Tinea cruris: Jock itch

Symptoms

  • Ring-shaped, red, scaly patches
  • Itching and burning sensation
  • Slightly raised edges
  • Clearer skin in the center
  • Overlapping rings in severe cases

Causes and Transmission

Ringworm is caused by dermatophytes - fungi that feed on keratin in the skin. It spreads through:

  • Direct skin-to-skin contact
  • Contact with infected animals
  • Sharing personal items
  • Walking barefoot in contaminated areas

Treatment Options

Over-the-Counter Treatments

  • Antifungal creams (miconazole, clotrimazole)
  • Antifungal powders
  • Antifungal sprays

Prescription Medications

  • Oral antifungal medications for severe cases
  • Prescription-strength topical treatments

Prevention

  1. Keep skin clean and dry
  2. Don't share personal items
  3. Wear shoes in public areas
  4. Change socks and underwear daily
  5. Treat infected pets promptly

When to See a Doctor

  • If over-the-counter treatments don't work
  • If the rash is widespread
  • If you have diabetes or a weakened immune system
  • If the scalp is affected

Recovery and Aftercare

  • Continue treatment for prescribed duration
  • Keep affected areas dry
  • Wash bedding and clothes regularly
  • Monitor for recurrence
