What is Molluscum Contagiosum?

Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral skin infection caused by a poxvirus. It produces small, raised, round lesions (bumps) on the skin that are typically painless but can be bothersome.

Key Characteristics

  • Small, flesh-colored or pink dome-shaped bumps
  • Size ranges from 2-5 millimeters
  • Often have a small dimple or depression in the center
  • Usually appear in clusters
  • Can occur anywhere on the body

How It Spreads

The virus spreads through:

  • Direct skin-to-skin contact
  • Contact with contaminated objects
  • Scratching or touching existing lesions
  • Swimming pools and shared towels

Risk Factors

  • Young children
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • Athletes in contact sports
  • People with atopic dermatitis

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is typically made through:

  1. Visual examination
  2. Clinical history
  3. Occasionally, skin biopsy if unclear

Treatment Options

Self-resolution

  • Many cases clear on their own within 6-12 months
  • May take longer in some individuals

Medical Interventions

  • Cryotherapy (freezing)
  • Curettage (scraping)
  • Topical medications
  • Laser therapy

Prevention

  • Avoid direct contact with infected areas
  • Don't share personal items
  • Keep lesions covered
  • Practice good hygiene

When to See a Doctor

  • If lesions become painful or infected
  • When lesions spread extensively
  • If you have a weakened immune system
  • If lesions persist beyond 12 months

Living With Molluscum

  • Continue normal activities
  • Avoid scratching
  • Keep skin clean and dry
  • Follow treatment plan as prescribed

Complications
