What is Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive gynecological procedure that allows doctors to examine the inside of the uterus using a thin, lighted instrument called a hysteroscope.

Purpose and Indications

• Diagnostic purposes:

  • Investigating abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Evaluating recurrent miscarriages
  • Identifying causes of infertility
  • Locating displaced IUDs

• Therapeutic purposes:

  • Removing fibroids or polyps
  • Treating adhesions (scar tissue)
  • Endometrial ablation
  • Correcting uterine septum

The Procedure

Before the Procedure

• Typically scheduled after menstruation
• May require fasting for 6-8 hours
• Pregnancy test usually performed

During the Procedure

1. Local or general anesthesia administered
2. Cervix gently dilated
3. Hysteroscope inserted through cervix
4. Sterile fluid introduced to expand uterus
5. Visual examination performed

Recovery and Aftercare

• Usually outpatient procedure
• Recovery time: 1-2 days
• Mild cramping and spotting normal
