What is a Gastroscopy?

A gastroscopy (also called upper endoscopy) is a medical procedure that allows doctors to examine the upper part of your digestive system using a thin, flexible tube with a camera (endoscope).

• Esophagus (food pipe)
• Stomach
• First part of small intestine (duodenum)

Why is it Performed?

Common Reasons:

• Investigating persistent stomach pain
• Difficulty swallowing
• Persistent heartburn
• Unexplained nausea or vomiting
• Screening for stomach cancer

The Procedure

Before the Procedure

1. Fast for 6-8 hours
2. Inform doctor about medications
3. Arrange transport home

During the Procedure

• Duration: 15-30 minutes
• Local anesthetic throat spray
• Optional sedation
• Endoscope insertion through mouth

After the Procedure

• Recovery time: 1-2 hours
• Temporary throat numbness
• Can usually go home same day

Possible Complications

Rare but may include:

• Sore throat
• Bleeding
• Infection
• Perforation (very rare)

Results and Follow-up
