What is Cyclospora?

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that causes an intestinal infection called cyclosporiasis. The parasite infects the small intestine and typically causes watery diarrhea, with symptoms appearing about one week after exposure.

Common Symptoms

  • Frequent, watery diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramping and bloating
  • Nausea and fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Low-grade fever
  • Body aches

How It Spreads

Cyclospora spreads through:

  • Consuming contaminated food or water
  • Fresh produce that hasn't been properly washed
  • Imported fruits and vegetables from regions where the parasite is common

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis

  • Stool sample analysis
  • Multiple samples may be needed
  • Special laboratory testing techniques

Treatment

  • Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX)
  • Typically prescribed for 7-10 days
  • Fluid and electrolyte replacement if needed

Prevention

  1. Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly
  2. Drink bottled or filtered water in endemic areas
  3. Practice good hand hygiene
  4. Be cautious with food when traveling

Risk Factors

  • Travel to endemic regions
  • Consuming raw produce
  • Weakened immune system
  • Summer season (May to September)

When to Seek Medical Care

Consult your healthcare provider if you experience:

  • Prolonged diarrhea (>3 days)
  • Severe dehydration
  • High fever
  • Inability to keep fluids down

Long-term Outlook

Most people recover completely with proper treatment, though symptoms may persist for several weeks. Without treatment, symptoms can last for months.
