What Are Corns and Calluses?

Corns and calluses are thickened areas of skin that develop in response to repeated pressure or friction. While both are forms of protective skin buildup:

  • Corns are smaller, concentrated areas usually found on toes
  • Calluses are larger, flatter areas typically on weight-bearing surfaces

Common Causes

  • Ill-fitting shoes
  • Abnormal foot mechanics
  • Regular pressure from activities
  • Walking barefoot frequently
  • Foot deformities (bunions, hammertoes)

Symptoms

Corns

  • Small, round areas of thickened skin
  • Central core that can be painful
  • Often found on toes or between toes

Calluses

  • Broad, flat areas of thickened skin
  • Usually painless
  • Commonly found on heels and balls of feet

Treatment Options

Self-Care Measures

  1. Wear properly fitting shoes
  2. Use protective padding
  3. Soak feet in warm water
  4. Gentle exfoliation with pumice stone

Medical Treatment

  • Professional debridement
  • Prescription medications
  • Orthotics or insoles
  • Surgery (in severe cases)

Prevention

  • Choose comfortable, well-fitting footwear
  • Use cushioned insoles
  • Wear socks with shoes
  • Address underlying foot conditions

When to See a Doctor

  • If you have diabetes
  • When self-care isn't effective
  • If there's pain or inflammation
  • When you notice redness or drainage

Warning

Never attempt to cut or shave corns and calluses at home, especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation.
