What is Brain Death?

Brain death is the complete and irreversible loss of all brain function. It represents the legal and medical definition of death in many countries. When someone is declared brain dead, this means their brain has permanently stopped working, even though their heart may continue beating with mechanical support.

• Complete loss of consciousness
• Absence of brainstem reflexes
• Inability to breathe independently
• Irreversible condition

How is Brain Death Diagnosed?

Diagnosis requires multiple tests and observations:

Clinical Examination

• Absence of response to pain
• No pupillary response to light
• Loss of corneal reflex
• No gag or cough reflexes
• No response to cold caloric testing
• No spontaneous breathing

Confirmatory Tests

• Apnea testing
• EEG (electroencephalogram)
• Cerebral blood flow studies
• CT angiography

Differences from Other Conditions

Not the Same as Coma

• Coma patients may have some brain function
• Potential for recovery exists in coma

Not the Same as Vegetative State

• Vegetative patients maintain some brainstem functions
• Can breathe independently
