What Is a Bone Cyst?
A bone cyst is a fluid-filled cavity that develops within a bone. These benign (non-cancerous) lesions most commonly occur in children and young adults.
Types of Bone Cysts
1. Unicameral Bone Cysts (Simple Bone Cysts)
- Most common in children aged 5-15
- Typically occur in long bones
- Usually found in upper arm (humerus) or thigh bone (femur)
2. Aneurysmal Bone Cysts
- Blood-filled cysts
- Can expand and cause bone thinning
- More aggressive than simple cysts
Common Symptoms
- Often asymptomatic and discovered incidentally
- Pain in the affected area
- Swelling
-
Increased risk of fracture
- Limited mobility in severe cases
Diagnosis
- X-rays
- CT scans
- MRI scans
- Bone biopsy (in certain cases)
Treatment Options
Conservative Treatment
- Observation and monitoring
- Regular follow-up X-rays
- Activity modification
Surgical Interventions
-
Steroid Injection
- Minimally invasive
- May require multiple treatments
-
Bone Marrow Injection
- Uses patient's own healing cells
- Can promote natural healing
-
Curettage and Bone Grafting
- Removal of cyst
- Filling cavity with bone graft
Recovery and Prognosis
- Most bone cysts heal well with appropriate treatment
- Regular follow-up important
- Risk of recurrence varies by type
- Full recovery possible in most cases
When to Seek Medical Attention
- Persistent bone pain
- Swelling in bones or joints
- Unexplained fractures
- Limited mobility
Prevention
- Regular exercise for bone strength
- Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake
- Regular medical check-ups
- Prompt attention to bone pain
