What is Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against your artery walls as your heart pumps. It's measured using two numbers:
-
Systolic pressure (top number): Pressure when your heart beats
-
Diastolic pressure (bottom number): Pressure when your heart rests
The Testing Procedure
Before the Test
- Avoid caffeine and exercise for 30 minutes prior
- Empty your bladder
- Sit quietly for 5 minutes
- Keep feet flat on the floor
During Measurement
- The healthcare provider will place a cuff around your upper arm
- The cuff inflates to temporarily stop blood flow
- As it slowly deflates, the provider listens with a stethoscope or uses an automated device
Understanding Your Results
Normal Blood Pressure
Elevated Blood Pressure
- 120-129/less than 80 mmHg
High Blood Pressure
- Stage 1: 130-139/80-89 mmHg
- Stage 2: 140+/90+ mmHg
Important Considerations
- Multiple readings may be taken
- Blood pressure varies throughout the day
- Home monitoring may be recommended
- Follow-up testing schedule depends on your results
When to Seek Medical Attention
- Readings above 180/120 mmHg
- Symptoms like severe headache or chest pain
- Consistently elevated readings
Tips for Accurate Readings
- Use proper cuff size
- Position arm at heart level
- Remain still and quiet during measurement
- Take readings at the same time daily
- Record all readings for your healthcare provider
