Osteoporosis Medication Schedule and Management Guide

Daily Medications

Oral Bisphosphonates

• Alendronate (Fosamax®)

  • Take first thing in the morning
  • Take with 8 oz plain water only
  • Remain upright for 30 minutes
  • Wait 30 minutes before eating or taking other medications

• Risedronate (Actonel®)

  • Follow same instructions as alendronate

Weekly Medications

Once-Weekly Bisphosphonates

• Alendronate 70mg
  • Choose the same day each week
  • Follow daily bisphosphonate instructions

Monthly Medications

Once-Monthly Medications

• Ibandronate (Boniva®)
  • Take on the same date each month
  • Follow daily bisphosphonate instructions

Injectable Medications

Every 6 Months

• Denosumab (Prolia®)
  • Administered by healthcare provider
  • Mark your calendar for next dose

Once Yearly

• Zoledronic acid (Reclast®)
  • Administered by IV in clinic
  • Schedule annual appointment

Important Guidelines

For All Medications

1. Take calcium supplements at different times
2. Report side effects to your doctor
3. Keep all follow-up appointments
4. Maintain adequate calcium and vitamin D intake

Emergency Situations

Contact your healthcare provider if you experience:

• Severe bone, joint, or muscle pain
• Jaw pain or swelling
• Unusual thigh pain
