Joint Replacement Surgery Medication Guide

Pre-Surgery Medications (2 Weeks Before)

Medications to Stop

• Blood thinners (consult your doctor for specific timing)
• NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen)
• Certain supplements (vitamin E, fish oil, glucosamine)

Medications to Continue

• Blood pressure medications
• Heart medications
• Thyroid medications

Morning of Surgery

Take These Medications

• Blood pressure medications with small sip of water
• Any medications specifically approved by your surgeon

Do Not Take

• Diabetes medications
• Diuretics

Post-Surgery Medication Schedule

Pain Management

1. First 24-48 Hours

   • Prescribed opioid medication every 4-6 hours as needed
   • IV pain medication in hospital

2. Days 3-7

   • Transition to oral pain medication
   • Begin scheduled acetaminophen

3. Weeks 2-4

   • Gradual reduction in pain medication
   • Continue acetaminophen as needed

Blood Clot Prevention

• Injectable anticoagulant for 2-3 weeks
• Compression stockings as directed

Additional Medications

• Stool softeners while taking opioids
• Anti-nausea medication as needed
• Antibiotics as prescribed

Important Notes

• Take all medications as prescribed
• Do not skip doses of blood thinners
• Report any unusual reactions immediately
• Keep a medication log

Follow-Up Care

• Bring medication list to all appointments
• Discuss any new medications with your surgeon
• Plan for medication refills in advance
